About

The author, Suzanne Schmidt Goldstein with a 200+ lb. striped marlin caught in the Galapagos on 20 lb. fly tippet.

Released.

My father, Theodore Schmidt, died young at 41.  I have been on an incredible journey the last 13 years researching the history of my family.  While I grew up knowing all the family fishing stories, it was not until I thoroughly researched it did I find out how significant their contributions were to this sport.  Because of my age at the time of my father's death, I was not able to catch my first billfish until 53 and, of course, in Panama.  Having been raised around these men and learning to fish on the Caiman II, catching my first marlin sparked a hidden passion for the sport.  I continued on to the challenge of billfish on fly.

In the coming months, I will be completing two books.  The first will be about my family, The Schmidts of Panama, and their great story of adventure and accomplishment of poor men in a rich man's sport.

The second book will be about the great Panama anglers at that time and two of their fishing clubs - The Pacific Sailfish Club and the Panama Marlin Club
